몇시간전 Google의 YouTube 인수소식이 전해져 왔습니다. $1.65 billion에 유투브의 모든 주식을 인수하는 조건으로 딜이 이루어졌습니다. 막판까지 Yahoo가 인수전에 참여했다는 소문도 있었지만 결국 구글의 승리(?)로 끝이 났군요. 이번에도 유투브의 30% 정도의 지분을 가지고 있는 VC업계의 강자 Sequoia Capital이 1년 반만에 40배가 넘는 이익을 남겼습니다. 이번 계약 성사 후 구글에서는 이 사실을 컨퍼런스콜로 발표했는데 그 중 Copyrighted content에 대한 auto-recognize 기술에 대한 언급이 눈길을 끕니다.
2005년 2월 창업하여 짧은 기간에 이렇게 놀라운 성장을 기록할 수 있었던 것은 결국 사람들에 의한 파급효과가 얼마나 큰 것인지를 보여줍니다. 세르게이가 이번에도 말했듯이 동영상이 미디어로서의 중요한 역할을 할 것이 분명하고, 이러한 동영상을 어떻게 분류하고, 저장하고 연결시킬 것인가가 웹의 큰 과제가 될 것이라고 생각됩니다.
Sergey say “Google’s mission is to organize the worlds information…and video is an important part of the worlds informations."아쉬운 점은 우리나라에도 판도라를 비롯하여 비슷한 동영상 서비스가 많은데도 전세계적인 관심을 끌기에는 역부족이라는 사실입니다. 언어적인 문제이던 기술적인 문제이건간에 전세계인이 사용할 수 있는 서비스를 개발하고 그 사용자들의 힘을 통해 더욱 발전해 나갈 수 있는 모델을 만들어 가는것은 너무 큰 꿈일까요.
